Finally, They’re Here!

My seeds arrived while I was on vacation, so as soon as I got back I was eager to get started. As a reminder, I ordered 6 varities: EV01, BC01, BC03, BC04, BC11, and Keemum. Since my seeds had sat a bit, they were covered in white mold. Interestingly, BC04 had the highest amount of mold.

To begin, on 3/22/2025 I began soaking my seeds in tap water for 24 hours, as recommended by the University of Hawai’i’s Cooperative Extension Service.

The seeds immediately after being added to the water.

Apparently, the seeds that float are likely dried-out and therefore weaker/less viable. Figure 1 summarizes my observations on the seeds once added to the water. Figure 1

Variety Begin Soak (3pm 3/22/25) End Soak (3pm 3/23/25)
BC014 float0 float
BC110 float0 float
EV010 float0 float
BC030 float0 float
BC043 float2 float
Keemun1 float0 float

The two BC04 seeds that continued to float after 24 hours were covered in a relatively thick layer of white mold, which could explain why they did not sink. After soaking, I placed each seed in the seed starting trays under approximately an inch of potting mix. Each tray was labled with their corresponding variety, and the two BC04 floaters were labled for further observation.
